Artist:
Rottenhammer, Hans
Notes:

Hans Rottenhammer 1564-1625

A history painter, Hans Rottenhammer was born in Munich and died in Augsburg in 1625.  He was first a student of Donauer.  He left for Rome very early in his career where he was appreciated for his small paintings with historical and mythological themes.  He then discovered his true passion while studying the works of Tintoretto and Veronese in Venise.  In comparison to his German period, his paintings became lighter in appearance and more elegant.

He executed some works for the Venetian churches.  He was also commissioned for some paintings.

After working in several Italian cities, he returned to Germany, in Augsburg, under the Emperor Rodolphe II for whom he executed some works.  Many of the landscapes in his works were painted by Jan Brueghel  and Paul Brill.
