Clarkson Stanfield, R.A.
1793 Sunderland – 1867 London
-attributed to-
This painting, of which a variety of versions are known, is a variation of the painting of Clarkson Stanfied which is now in the Tate Gallery, London, England. It was probably later done as a private commission. It is smaller in scale, which makes it perhaps more attractive for the private home.
Depicted is a seascape with fishing boats and a windmill. In the background, we observe a marine frigate in moved waters on the Holland coast.
Oil on canvas, relined, size: 64 cm x 76 cm
Signed lower left on the wood: Stanfield with date (?).
Painted after his travels to Holland in 1843, where he studied Dutch and Flemish masters.
Stanfield is considered as a major English marine painter and can be found in many Museums and collections i.e. Tate Gallery, London, Victorian & Albert Museum, London, British Museum, London and many more.
